TAMPA - The remnants of Tropical Storm Ida slowly pushed northeast as an associated front pushed through the Tampa Bay area, bringing overnight rain early this morning and expected cooler temperatures tonight.

A line of heavy rain along the cold front brought heavy rain to the area about 3 a.m. today. The line weakened shortly after coming ashore from the Gulf of Mexico, and only isolated showers are expected around Tampa the rest of the day.

Winds will stay out of the west through the afternoon, but by this evening, winds are expected to shift out of the northwest. This northwest wind will be gusty at 10 to 20 mph, and it will usher in some cooler air.

Overnight lows will range from the upper 50s to the low 60s. That is about 10 degrees cooler than Tuesday night.

North winds will continue Thursday, so it will stay cooler than average. Expect highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Seasonal highs this time of the year are in the upper 70s.

It will stay breezy Thursday, and a light passing shower is possible. It will still be cool Friday with highs in the low 70s, but the Bay area will warm up to near 80 this weekend.

Meantime, wet weather was expected to persist in the South as Ida continues up the East Coast.

The system was expected to continue picking up moisture from the Gulf and spread scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Mid-Atlantic states, while the Southeastern states could start to dry out.

Strong atmospheric steering at high levels was expected to drive Ida eastward and prevent the storm from moving northward and up the coast.

Flooding was expected to remain a concern over the Lower Mississippi Valley and threaten the Tennessee Valley and Carolinas. Rainfall totals were expected to be between 2 inches and 3 inches in many of these areas with strong and damaging winds with gusts up to 20 mph.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
