DADE CITY - City commissioners appointed former Mayor Bill Dennis on Tuesday to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Pro-Tem Steve Van Gorden, who resigned his commission seat at the conclusion of the meeting.
Dennis, once the longest-serving member of the city commission, will be sworn in Dec. 8. As a commissioner, he had a reputation for independence, often coming out on the losing end of 4-1 votes.
Van Gorden was elected in 2004 and again in 2008. His term would have expired in 2012. He announced in October that he would resign from the commission because of family and professional responsibilities and because he is moving out of the city.
Dennis will hold the seat until the city election in April. The seat will be on the ballot for the remaining two years of the term, and then it will revert to a four-year term in 2012.
