TAMPA - A teenager accidentally set fire to her family's duplex apartment this afternoon when she threw a pot of burning oil into the sink, Tampa Fire Rescue said.
Nikelle Harris, 17, was heating cooking oil on the stove when the oil caught fire. When she placed the pot of burning oil in the sink, the oil splashed and set part of the kitchen on fire, the fire department said.
Harris, her younger brother and two other people in the apartment escaped unharmed. The home, 8732 N. 48th St., sustained damage estimated at $25,000.
The fire began about 12:30 p.m. and was under control within 10 minutes.
The American Red Cross was called to assist with temporary shelter.
