PLANT CITY - First United Methodist Church of Plant City is launching a ministry to feed the needy with a meal on Thanksgiving.
The church expects to feed about 250 people when it opens the doors of its Fishes and Loaves Café for the Thanksgiving day meal. But that's just the beginning.
Plans call for the Fishes and Loaves Café to serve lunch to the needy on Thursdays at least through December, and hopefully beyond, if there's support from other organizations in the community, church spokesman A.J. Kime said. The meals will be served only to those who have been referred by the United Food Bank of Plant City, he added.
The food bank will screen those seeking help and verify their need, he said.
The church decided to start the ministry due to the need in the community in these stormy economic times, Kime said.
The church will use its Wesley Centre, 202 W. Reynolds St., for its new ministry. The center has a commercial kitchen and doesn't get a lot of use, Kime said.
First United Methodist hopes to get support of other churches, clubs or other organizations to sustain the ministry, he said.
Any organization wishing to help should call First United Methodist at (813) 754-3519.
