Wharton tennis star makes UF his choice
One of Hillsborough County's most talented tennis players has made his college decision.
Wharton senior Michael Alford, the Tribune's reigning Boys Tennis Player of the Year, has verbally committed to the University of Florida. Alford chose the Gators over Florida State.
Last season, Alford won the Class 3A individual state title and paired with Rohit Navelkar to finish as the 3A doubles state runner-up. For his efforts, Alford was named the Florida Dairy Farmers' Class 3A Player of the Year.
Soccer
King senior forward/midfielder Steven Scrivens and Tampa Catholic senior midfielder Jason Getreu each have committed to Coker College, a Division II program.
Scrivens scored a team-best seven goals and added three assists last season. Getreu had three goals and three assists.
Tampa Catholic forward Andrew Buckley, who scored a county-best 29 goals last year, committed to the University of Tampa.
Rowing
Plant senior Elisabeth Murray has committed to Virginia, while Academy of the Holy Names senior Kiersten DeHaven has committed to Notre Dame.
Murray was a member of the U.S. Junior National Team Women's Varsity 8 that earned gold for the second consecutive year at the World Junior Championships in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France, in August. She has also been an integral figure in the Panthers' success during the past two seasons. Plant's women's crew won the state scholastic championship in the spring.
Baseball
Plant City senior infielder Kyle Madill has committed to the University of South Carolina-Upstate, a Division I program. Madill has been one of the Raiders' top offensive threats each of the past two seasons and led the team in hitting as a sophomore (.367 average) and junior (.375).
Also, Leto senior infielder!Erick Gutierrez has committed to Hillsborough Community College. Gutierrez hit .380 with five doubles, a home run, 12 RBIs and 17 runs scored last season.
In other baseball news, former Plant High standout Mychal Givens was one of nine high school recipients of a Rawlings Gold Glove. Givens, who is in the Baltimore Orioles' organization, was honored as the nation's top defensive shortstop.
Softball
East Bay senior infielder Elizabeth Nugent and Plant senior catcher/infielder Ashley Schnitzler have committed to a Division II program. Nugent is headed to West Florida, while Schnitzler has chosen Lynn.
Nugent hit .304 with five doubles, 16 RBIs and 16 runs scored last season. Schnitzler hit. 317 with 17 runs scored and 21 RBIs.
