Swine flu exposure

The article "Swine flu challenges airlines" (front page, Nov. 10) shows how center stage the issue of swine flu is in this country. In this case a passenger was asked to leave the plane after getting sick in the lavatory and asking for a sickness bag. She claims she was humiliated. This was a simple case of the airline personnel exercising extreme caution over swine flu exposure.

I can just see the headlines now if the passenger did have flu and ended up infecting most of the plane on route to Hawaii! There would be outrage galore.

Since when is it so horrible to err on the side of caution? I for one applaud the actions of the flight crew. In this day and age, if one is not well enough to travel in a confined area, as in an airplane, they should make other travel arrangements. The air crew was thinking of the larger group of passengers.

Lane law

I read the letter "Angry Driver" from Glen Nagy (Letters, Nov. 7) with dismay and amusement and am writing to let him know that I passed a law just for him (Florida Statute section 316.083) - well, that's an exaggeration; someone else passed the law.

What we need is the police presence to control twits who misuse the lanes on multilane highways, but of course, everyone chokes at the cost of paying for that.

For what it's worth, those drivers don't read newspapers (some can't read), and if they did, they wouldn't recognize themselves as in error because they are too preoccupied with their lives, talking on cell phones and sending text messages.

County jail rocks

Concerning your editorial, "Don't overreact to jailhouse attack," (Our Opinion, Nov. 11): I would like to laud the direct supervision policy at the Hillsborough County jail.

As a chaplain in the jails, I am continually impressed and amazed at the discipline that is maintained in the open-pod housing units. To a great extent I believe this is due to the high quality and caliber of the deputies who serve. I have never known a finer, more dedicated group of individuals than those who serve in the jails. Sheriff David Gee is to be commended on attracting persons of quality to the jail system.
