DADE CITY - Centennial Elementary School's Relay for Life team aims to "close the book" on cancer with the help of a fundraising yard sale this weekend.
Coordinated by Centennial Elementary School second grade teacher Sara Barthle, captain of the school's relay team, the Relay for Life yard sale will feature 30 booths offering a variety of products. The sale starts at 7 a.m. today in the parking lot of Centennial Elementary, 38501 Centennial Road, Dade City.
"You can find anything out there," Barthle said. "We've got baby clothes, clothes, furniture and many other items."
Members of the 13-person Centennial Elementary team will be on hand to sell hot dogs and baked goods, with all proceeds going to the Relay for Life. The team has a fundraising goal of $7,000.
The relay theme is "Close the book and cancer." The relay will be March 26 at Zephyrhills High School.
"All of the money raised stays in Pasco County," Barthle said.
The Centennial Elementary team is dedicating its efforts this year to Shane Sayler, a fourth-grader at the school who recently was diagnosed with cancer. In keeping with the "close the book" theme, team members are preparing a book, "Shane's Story: A Biography of Courage." It chronicles various stages of Shane's life, including his cancer battle.
"He's so optimistic and has such a great outlook. The school is coming together for Shane," Barthle said.
"We wanted to plan a fundraiser that would get the community involved in raising funds for our relay goal," Barthle said of the yard sale.
