HUDSON - In a game that was supposed to showcase two of Pasco County's top quarterbacks, a backup running back stole the spotlight and perhaps showed that the Gators can run - not pass - to victory after all.
Junior Ryan Lane, whom Land O' Lakes (9-1) coach Matt Kitchie basically named the 2010 starter afterwards, had 17 carries for 126 yards. Kitchie wanted to lighten the workload of regular starter Tyler Peak, who had just six carries so he's fresh for next week's playoff game at Jefferson.
"They were covering us man-to-man and taking that away so we pounded it with the run game," Kitchie said.
The much-anticipated battle between two of Pasco County's top quarterbacks - Hudson's Zack Wynn and Land O' Lakes' Stephen Weatherford - never materialized. Wynn was 10 of 21 for 114 yards, with one touchdown (to former Gator James Tello on the last play) and two interceptions. Weatherford, who leads the county with 24 touchdown passes, was 7 of 11 for 76 yards, and had the game's first points on a 1-yard sneak in the third quarter.
Spencer Michelson and Andrew Gorgen added fourth-quarter touchdown runs for the Gators, who had 91 total yards in the first half and 233 in the second.
