LITHIA - Despite going into Friday night's game already advancing to the playoffs, Newsome coach Kenneth Hiscock said that the Wolves - who fell behind 13-0 in the first quarter to Gaither - didn't look like a playoff team.
"We played ignorant and that's no way to go into the playoffs," Hiscock said.
Quarterback Matt Klenke finally got the Wolves offense going, but it took an interception by Will Worth deep in Newsome territory in the final seconds to secure the victory.
The Cowboys (1-9) started early with a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Shug Oyegunle. The run was set up by a 62-yard pass from Oyegunle to Julius Henderson.
On the next drive, Oyegunle found Chris Joseph in the corner of the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown pass to put the Cowboys ahead, 13-0.
After a field goal put Newsome (7-3) on the scoreboard in the second quarter, Klenke found Niko Anthony for an 18-yard touchdown pass on the Wolves' next possession to reduce Gaither's lead to 13-10.
In the second half, Keller Powers scored on a 12-yard run to put the Wolves ahead for good.
