George Rogers won the Heisman Trophy in 1980 at South Carolina. He's loyal to his school. But Rogers said before Saturday's USC-Florida game that he likes Tim Tebow so much that he's cheering for Tebow to win a second Heisman.
Rogers thinks Archie Griffin, the only double winner in 1974-75, is also rooting for Tebow to match him as the only two-time Heisman winner. Griffin has said in the past he would be thrilled to have another two-time winner join him.
"I would love to see him win the Heisman Trophy (a second time) yes,'' Rogers said. "No doubt about it. I think he's not only a great candidate but a great person.''
Rogers - who allows fans to take his photo with the Heisman to help raise scholarship money for his foundation at each USC home game - spent time with Tebow when the Gator quarterback won the Heisman in 2007 and last year, when he was a finalist.
"I think Archie (would like Tebow to win),'' Rogers said. "Any time you are a good guy like he is everybody pulls for you and he's not a fake or a phony. He's a good kid and I've got nothing but good things to say about him. I'm a Gamecock, I want to win (against Florida) but as far as Tim Tebow goes, hey, he's a great person.''
Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, Tebow already has one Heisman. Rogers said being a Heisman winner is something that doesn't really set in - and the impact it has on your life - until years later
"He will never grasp it until he gets older,'' Rogers said. "Not to say that we're the person, but I didn't. He may have an idea but right now, he doesn't know (what it will mean later).''
