COLUMBIA, S.C. - Florida sophomore K Caleb Sturgis missed from 52, 54 and 29 yards on field-goal attempts. He went into the game perfect outside of 39 yards (4-for-4).
Sturgis had just three misses on 20 attempts going into Saturday - failing from 20 vs. LSU and 37 against Arkansas and Mississippi State.
Freshman Xavier Nixon got the first start of his career at left tackle. Meyer had raved recently about Nixon and said he was starting to figure in the plans.
It was the fourth combination up front used by the Gators this season. The last freshman to start at left tackle was Reggie Green in 1992. Mo Collins (1995) was the last freshman to start at right tackle.
"He's going to be a great player here," Meyer said. "He earned that right."
Redshirt freshman WR Omarius Hines, who hadn't caught a ball in league play, caught an 11-yarder on Florida's second touchdown drive in the first half.
