CLEARWATER - The Florida Highway Patrol says it has one suspect in custody and police are seeking another after a police chase Sunday afternoon that ended next to Clearwater High School.
FHP Sgt. Steven Gaskins says Clearwater police had just received a report of a stolen white Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck when troopers in the area detected a computerized alarm from the vehicle in question.
Officers began pursuing the truck at Fairwood Avenue and Drew Street, and ended up chasing the truck westbound on Gulf to Bay Boulevard.
Troopers say the driver of the stolen truck lost control while trying to turn left onto Arcturas Avenue just west of the Clearwater High stadium and stopped just short of a tree.
Gaskins said the pursuing highway patrol car skidded to a stop right behind the truck and the driver then backed up into the FHP car.
Gaskins said the trooper pulled forward, pinning the truck between his crash bumper, a fence and a tree.
FHP troopers managed to capture one of the suspects in the stolen truck, but the other is still at large.
Gaskins says the trooper was taken to the hospital for examination after the minor collision with the truck.
He said the identity of the suspect in custody was not clear.
