A 59-year-old man from Vermont with several years of hang gliding experience died after hitting a tree while trying to land a hang glider Sunday afternoon in Polk County.
Witnesses told the Polk County Sheriff's Office that Anthony Ameo was trying to land the hang glider at Wallaby Ranch in Davenport about 2:15 p.m., when he hit a tree and fell to the ground, the sheriff's office said.
Ameo, from Sheffield, Vt., was flown to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He died from his injuries during surgery about 5 p.m.
Ameo was at Wallaby Ranch, a commercial hang gliding park, when the crash occurred. He came to Florida with a friend Oct. 30 for a vacation that included hang gliding, the sheriff's office said.
