SEFFNER - Students at McDonald Elementary School will attend classes at the school today at the regular time despite a fire that damaged part of the school Saturday morning.

Cleanup crews worked around the clock over the weekend to have the school ready for students. The workers need to get soot off of all the surfaces and smoke out of the air.

They started cleaning at 9 a.m. Saturday and expected to be there until midnight Sunday.

Hillsborough County school officials said that classes normally held in that wing will be held in the cafeteria and library while the damage from the fire is cleaned up.

Saturday's predawn fire caused smoke damage in 15 of the school's 38 classrooms. The classrooms are in the section of the school that serves kindergarten through second grade.

McDonald Elementary is at 501 W. Pruett Road in eastern Hillsborough County.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue officials said the slow-burning fire started in a kindergarten room. Fire crews responded to the fire at 6:30 a.m. and extinguished the blaze by 8 a.m.
