TAMPA - Talk about a breath of fresh air - literally.

The season's first cold front - or perhaps we should call this a cool front - breezed through the Tampa Bay area early Wednesday, sending temperatures dipping to levels they haven't been at in months.

That means you won't have to worry about sweating on the drive to work today. And you can actually put the car windows down instead of cranking the air conditioner.

The morning low in Tampa on Wednesday was 67 degrees - the first time since May 31 that the mercury dropped below 70. Elsewhere, it was 62 degrees in Lake Alfred in Polk County and 52 in Bronson in Levy County.

"It was pretty cool," said Anthony Reynes, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin. "It felt very comfortable."

Readings were expected to be even a few degrees lower this morning. The weekend forecast is for higher temperatures but a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday as another cold front moves through.

The arrival of the first cold front of the season came at least a couple of weeks ahead of normal. Often it's mid-October before a front lowers temperatures into the 60s in the area.
