PALMETTO - A mother and son are dead and a suspect is in critical condition after a home invasion in Palmetto late Thursday.

Two men burst into a home at 3909 Third Ave. Drive E., started yelling, then started shooting, Manatee County deputies said.

The homeowner, 43-year-old Patricia White, was fatally shot by one of the men, deputies said. Her 22-year-old son, Clarence "C.J." White, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, deputies said.

One of the intruders, Lamont Yarn, 19, was taken to an area hospital after he was shot, deputies said. He is critical condition.

Detectives are still searching for the other suspect.

Deputies were interviewing three other men and a woman who were in the house.

It did not appear to be a random attack, sheriff's office spokesman Dave Bristow said.

Family and friends describe mother and son as extremely close. C.J. also has a 4-year-old daughter. He and his daughter attended church together last Sunday where he told his grandmother about his new goals along with a new promotion at a nearby Wal-Mart.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (941) 747-3011 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-634-8477.
