TAMPA - The federal government has awarded a $5.3 million grant for dredging 70 miles of channels in Tampa Harbor and $472,000 to widen a portion of the main Tampa channel to create a passing lane for ships through the Port of Tampa, U.S. Rep Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, said Friday.
Port Manatee also received $998,542 for security upgrades from a grant though the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. It will purchase hybrid security vehicles and enhance surveillance technology.
In addition, Castor said, the federal government will award $100,000 to allow the Army Corps of Engineers to determine whether federal maintenance is needed at Port Manatee's Manatee Harbor.
