MIDDLETON...10 LENNARD...6
RUSKIN - Middleton quarterback Willie Clay orchestrated a nine-play, 69-yard game-winning drive that included eight straight completions as the Tigers fought back to win their first Class 2A-District 5 game of the season over Lennard on Friday night.
After both teams went scoreless during the first three quarters of play, Middleton was the first to break the ice when kicker Steve Jourdain booted an 18-yard field goal with 5:36 left in the fourth quarter.
Lennard answered right back as the Longhorns finished off a 98-yard drive when quarterback Fred Porter found a wide open Demyco Winston for a 39-yard touchdown pass that seemingly put the home team in front for good with a little more than two minutes to play.
But unfortunately for Lennard the Middleton offense had just begun to heat up as Clay found an array of receivers including Justin Sanders (8 catches for 60 yards) four times and the Tigers scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Clay with 10 seconds left.
"We came together and I told the kids that's the first step in the right direction towards winning habits," Tigers coach Jason Stokes said. "And that's what the school needs right now - I'm very proud of my kids."
