SPOTO...35 RIVERVIEW...0
RIVERVIEW - Spoto's defense earned its fourth shutout of the season, and third in a row, in its home victory against Riverview.
The Spartans (5-0) struggled a bit to pull away in the first half. Darius Ridgeway's 50-yard interception return for a touchdown gave Spoto the lead on the game's fourth play from scrimmage, but Riverview hung tough.
The Sharks (1-3) stopped Spoto five times with good field position before a fumble by the punter set up the Spartans. Danny Taylor scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns from 1 yard out with 1:35 left in the first half, and Charlie Waits ran for the 2-point conversion to give Spoto a 14-0 halftime lead.
Spoto broke the game open with its first two possessions of the second half. A blocked punt set up Rodney Williams' 6-yard touchdown run and James Brown hit Waits for a 65-yard touchdown pass with 2:53 left in the third quarter. Waits also had a team-high 62 yards rushing.
Riverview running backs Ronnie Johnson and Terrance Carter combined for 148 yards rushing, but Spoto's defense stopped everyone else for negative yardage, held when it needed to and forced five turnovers.
