TAMPA - Friends and family held a candlelight vigil this evening in remembrance of Essence Jade Jovan Williams, the 19-year-old Tampa woman who died after she was shot following what authorities have called a domestic-related call.
The vigil was held at 7 p.m. at Harbour Walk apartments, at 6001 Webb Road, across from Town & Country Hospital. Seventy people gathered around a makeshift memorial that was composed of candles and a photograph of Williams.
Williams was shot Thursday at an apartment at 8320 Crystal Harbor Drive, where she was staying with friends, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has said. She died the following day at St. Joseph's Hospital.
It is unclear at this time how the shooting occurred, authorities said.
Deputies spoke with John Echevarria, Williams' on-again-off-again boyfriend, for three hours after the shooting and then released him. Agency spokesman J.D. Callaway described Echevarria as a witness last week.
Deputies are awaiting word from the medical examiner on the manner and cause of death, according to Callaway.
A handgun was found at the scene, Callaway said
