TAMPA - Drivers should brace for downtown streets to be torn up over the next year as work gets under way today to replace miles of water pipelines, some more than a century old.
The $17.7 million project is funded by a federal grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, water rate increases, bonds and community investment taxes.
Work on the pipelines will take about 16 months, according to the city.
Officials said the projects are necessary to improve the city's aging infrastructure, and the city will do its best to keep disruptions to a minimum.
Engineering firm CH2M Hill is coordinating the work.
The company has set up a hot line for questions and complaints at (813) 777-9222, and residents can stay up to date on the projects at www.tampa-ucap.com.
