BROOKSVILLE - A 53-year-old Hernando County woman has died from the H1N1 virus, making her the second county resident to have died from what is commonly called swine flu.
The woman, whose medical history was significant for chronic health conditions, was out of the town when she was hospitalized on Sept. 14. She died on Oct. 3, according to a released statement from the Hernando County Health Department.
"We are saddened by the news of the loss of one of our community members," said Elizabeth Callaghan, health department administrator.
As of Sept. 29, there have been 102 laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1-flu related deaths in Florida. Although mild in most cases, H1N1 can be serious. The health department is expecting to receive its first batch of intra-nasal vaccines for H1N1 later this week or early next week.
