Barksdale Senior Center in Tampa is a wonderful program for senior citizens. I have been going there five years. The center gives seniors the opportunity to keep in shape and thus maintain their health as much as possible.
Barskdale is so valuable because it allows many seniors the opportunity to meet people, socialize and provides somewhat of a support system. Many seniors are lonely, so Barksdale is also very important to those who may not have family and desperately need interaction with other people.
But due to the economy, the city has felt the need to raise the fee. For the coming year, city residents will pay $15, and county residents will pay $115. The fee is tragic to many, and they will have to quit. Most people realize that many seniors live on fixed incomes.
I feel the fee could have been raised perhaps to $50 per year. County seniors are very sad, as well as their city friends. We don't mind paying a little more, but all members should pay the same amount.
