MIAMI - A former Miami teacher was sentenced to 2 years probation and 100 hours of community service for allegedly giving an autistic student soda spiked with hot sauce.
A Miami-Dade County judge withheld adjudication Wednesday on the child abuse charge against 60-year-old Sylvia Tagle. A jury found her guilty last month, but acquitted here on three other abuse charges.
Tagle's attorneys say she didn't give the boy anything - the beverage was hers, and he picked it up and drank it. Tagle testified that she puts hot sauce on everything, including her sodas.
The boy's parents were upset she didn't get a more lenient sentence. Tagle's defense said they may appeal, believing that hot sauce doesn't qualify as felony child abuse.
