Residents in New Tampa soon will have a new fire station and firefighters in their neighborhood, courtesy of the federal government.
Tampa Fire Rescue announced Thursday that the it is scheduled to receive a $1.6 million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund the Cross Creek Fire Station, spokesman Bill Wade said.
The salaries of the 15 firefighters it will take to staff the new station will be paid with a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The $1.4 million, distributed over five years, will allow the organization to hire 36 people, Wade said.
Sixteen new hires in training are being paid from this money, Wade said.
Construction on Cross Creek Fire Station No. 22, 10871 Cross Creek Road, will start this year.
