VERO BEACH - A popular park along Vero Beach's coast has reopened after officials cleaned up a long stretch of what they believed to be manatee poop.
Humiston Park Beach was shut down Thursday when the excrement was discovered.
Indian River County officials say they did a "feel and smell test" to determine whether the waste was human. They contacted state wildlife officials, who told them it could be from manatees, but no samples were ever tested.
The beach was littered with hundreds of piles of the stuff.
Lifeguards closed it while city workers buried the waste several feet into the sand.
County officials say it's rare for feces from manatees migrating along the coast to wash ashore, but recent high winds may have stirred it up from the ocean floor.
