Voluntary swine flu vaccines arriving the next few weeks are available in three forms. Just one contains Thimerosal, a preservative containing mercury.
•Nasal Spray: Also called Flu-Mist, this vaccine is a live, attenuated vaccine sprayed in the nose. This is not recommended for children younger than 2, pregnant women or people with underlying medical conditions such as asthma. It does not contain the preservative Thimerosal.
•Single dose: Vaccine is placed in individual syringes by the drugmaker. It does not contain the preservative Thimerosal.
•Multidose vials: Multiple doses of the vaccine are stored in a bottle, and health care workers aspirate the vaccine into an individual syringe. This vaccine contains the preservative Thimerosal.
