SPRING HILL - The homecoming celebration in the stands was matched by the celebration on the field as the Bishop McLaughlin Hurricanes (1-4) handily defeated the Hernando Christian Academy Lions (0-6) for their first victory of the season.
The Hurricanes were led in the first half by running back Giovanni Perone. His two short touchdown runs were sandwiched by running back Jordan Betancourt's 53-yard score along the right sideline. Perone rushed for 118 yards by halftime, but reinjured his hamstring on the first possession of the third quarter.
Hurricanes quarterback Mitch Ritter then took over, rushing for three second-half touchdowns. Ritter rushed for 142 yards and had a pair of 53-yard touchdown runs.
"We focused on our ground game and I was pleased with our execution," said Hurricanes coach Marty Williams.
Lion running backs, Nate Kautsky, Dakota D'Ambrosia and Jeremy Knight, combined for 154 rushing yards, with Knight scoring on a 9-yard run and Kautsky on a 2-yard run as Hernando Christian scored a pair of consolation touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
