NEW PORT RICHEY - Mitchell relied on a stingy defense and its workhorse tailback, Pasco County's leading rusher Ricky Trinidad (21 carries, 140 yards) to remain undefeated with a 21-7 win against the Zephyrhills Bulldogs in a Class 3A-District 7 game Friday night.
Both defenses were stingy in the first half. Zephyrhills kept Trinidad bottled up and the Mustangs, led by defensive end Dylan Lamb's two sacks, held the Bulldogs to 57 first-half yards.
An interception by Mitchell's Marcus Hicks sparked the Mustangs late in the first half. From there, Mitchell went 40 yards in seven plays as Trinidad scored from 5-yards out to give the Mustangs a 7-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, it was more of the same. A swarming Mustang defense was too much for the Bulldogs.
With a 14-0 lead, Mitchell's Chris Pagano intercepted a pass, and on the next play, Trinidad scored from 37-yards out to give the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead.
