TARPON SPRINGS - A week after earning a key victory at Largo, the Spongers used a trio of special teams plays to set up one-play scoring drives as they held visiting Ridgewood to 181 yards of offense.
"We do work on special teams and we've got great athletes back there that can cause some teams problems," Spongers coach George Kotis said.
For the game, the Spongers running back tandem of Adrian Golden and Darius Daniels was held to just 123 yards forcing Tarpon Springs (5-1, 2-0 4A-District 4) to shorten the field for its offense thanks to its special teams.
A 61-yard Savvas Damalos punt return set up Danny Chaisson's 1-yard scoring run for a 14-0 lead.
Ahead 14-7 at the half, the Spongers put the game away with a 21-point third quarter. A blocked punt on Ridgewood's first possession led to Golden's 5-yard burst off left tackle. Golden added an electrifying 55-yard scoring run for a 28-7 lead, before a bad punt snap set the Spongers up deep in Ridgewood territory again. Daniels went off right tackle for a 22-yard scoring run.
Tarpons Springs' defense was just as dominant, holding Ridgewood (1-5, 0-2) to just 62 yards.
