Government making do

Published: October 15, 2009

I read with great interest the article "Use regional approach to restore waterways" (Views, Oct. 11).

Rick Garrity's article covers the Hillsborough River and the Alafia River watersheds feeding Tampa Bay. What captured my attention were his two statements: "We have much to do" and "Cleaning up these waters will be expensive."

In these times, when government has no funds, and unemployment is at an all-time high, government management should be surfacing proposals that make do with what we have and to save money. This is not a good time to expand programs based upon regional exposure.

The regional proposal described in Garrity's article does state it is of major importance, which is certainly true. However, it does not need to be another addition to our local debt.
