TAMPA - Federal authorities made 1,785 arrests nationwide, including 138 in Florida, during a six-month initiative by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
More than 50 of the arrests were made by the agency's Tampa office, officials said.
ICE today announced the results of the initiative that ended Sept. 23 and also involved the seizure of more than 100 firearms.
Of the 1,785 people arrested during Operation Community Shield, 1,472 were gang members, associates or otherwise criminally charged, including 35 percent with violent criminal histories and 16 gang leaders, ICE said.
The others were arrested on immigration violations and have been placed into deportation proceedings.
ICE agents made arrests on criminal charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, and drug and firearms violations.
