LITHIA - In her last two seasons on varsity, Armwood outside hitter Emilee Taylor never enjoyed the feeling of finishing first in the district. In 2007 and 2008, Armwood placed second in the regular-season standings.
Thursday night, the senior finally discovered what it felt like.
Taylor led Armwood with 24 kills as her Hawks earned the top seed in Class 5A-District 8 with a 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 25-20 win against Newsome.
"We all had determination," Taylor said. "We had to fight. We expected competition and that's what we got."
"(Top seed) meant a lot this year because you have a bye with seven teams," Armwood coach Mike Wyatt said. "We worked all year for this match."
In Game 4, the Wolves led 16-15, but allowed a 9-1 run to get the Hawks to match point.
Newsome senior middle hitter Hillary Byrd led the Wolves (10-7) with six kills.
