While sales at furniture stores have been down this year, the American invention that linked lazing in the living room to television is one of the few bright spots in a well-worn U.S. household furniture industry.
Sales of reclining chairs are getting a lift from the growing popularity of high-tech TVs, home theater equipment and video games, as well as an aging population that is less active.
Expect manufacturers to introduce more recliners with gizmos - iPod connectivity and massagers - as the industry assembles in High Point, N.C., today to start its twice-a-year international trade show.
Sales of reclining furniture are expected to grow from $3.5 billion last year to $4 billion within five years. A comforting thought.
