Our national soccer team qualified for the World Cup next year with a 3-2 win over Honduras. The game was not publicly televised in the United States, but I spent Saturday evening with approximately 400 fellow Americans who paid to support the game on closed-circuit television.
When is the last time anyone paid to see football or baseball at a bar?
I challenge my fellow Americans to support the U.S. team when it plays in the World Cup next summer. I also challenge the media to step up to the plate and not bury the coverage on the last page as the Tribune did in the Sunday sports section ("U.S. clinches World Cup berth," Sports briefs, Oct. 11).
Only 32 teams will go to the World Cup out of more than 200, and we are now one of them. This was a historic and monumental feat!
