GAINESVILLE - The University of Florida has been given a gift of 2.2 million butterfly and moth specimens.
The donation by William and Nadine McGuire of Wayzata, Minn., is valued at more than $41 million.
The gift brings the number of UF specimens to more than 9 million, one of the world's largest collections.
The Florida Museum of Natural History houses the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, named for the McGuires after prior gifts.
Director Thomas Emmel says the donation contains possibly 1,000 new unnamed species.
Emmel says butterflies and moths are a flagship species to assess environmental health.
