TAMPA - Hillsborough Community College President Gwendolyn W. Stephenson announced Friday she plans to retire next June.
She took over HCC in 1997, which makes her the college's longest-serving president.
HCC board members have asked her to stay, said board chairman Rod Jurado. But Stephenson decided it was time to go. "There are cycles in every organization, as in life, and the art of leading well, as in living well, is to recognize a new cycle struggling to emerge," she said.
She said she wanted to give the board time to find a replacement before she left. The board plans a national search.
She listed several accomplishments, including a fifth campus in south Hillsborough, first "green" community college in Florida certified by the U.S. Green Building Council and creation of more than 170 academic programs.
