HOLIDAY - A head-on crash early Friday left a 24-year-old man dead, sent another man to the hospital and closed a portion of U.S. 19, authorities said.
William R. Ankenbauer, of Clearwater, was pronounced dead at Community Hospital in New Port Richey, authorities said.
Pasco Fire Rescue was called about 5:45 a.m. to the crash scene near McDonald's at U.S. 19 and Gulf Trace Boulevard.
Part of southbound U.S. 19 was closed for cleanup and investigation but was reopened after 8 a.m.
Ankenbauer, driving a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was headed north in in the southbound lane of U.S. 19 when he struck a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado traveling south, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Franklin C. Catanzaro, 32, of Spring Hill, driver of the Silverado, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he was listed in serous condition, the patrol said.
Neither driver was wearing a seat belt, troopers said.
The highway patrol's investigation is continuing. Witnesses are asked to contact Cpl. T.M. Shields at (727) 841-4181.
