LITHIA - Newsome defensive back Adam Mallady picked up his first two interceptions of the season in the first quarter, returning the second 102 yards for the deciding score in the Wolves' win against Leto.
A muffed punt gave Leto possession at the Newsome 21. However, three plays later Mallady ended the drive with the pick and a dash down the home sideline, outrunning potential Leto tacklers.
"I was getting tired," Mallady said. "But my only thought was, 'I need to score. I need to score.'"
The touchdown gave the Wolves a 6-0 lead after a missed extra point.
The Wolves also got a big lift in the second quarter by junior Vince Pennington, who rushed for the other two Newsome touchdowns, after junior tailback Conner Powers went down early in the first half with a leg injury. Wolves coach Kenneth Hiscock called the injury a "tweaked hamstring" for the team's leading rusher, who has eight touchdowns on the season. Hiscock said he didn't know the severity of the injury.
The Wolves were also without their second-leading rusher, senior Darnell Tucker, whom Hiscock said had a high ankle sprain and was doubtful for next week's district game against Bloomingdale.
