PALM BAY...24 WIRE. RANCH...13
MELBOURNE - It wasn't supposed to go quite that way.
Wiregrass Ranch was an August addition to the Palm Bay schedule and coming off a 1-9 season, but the Bulls team that came to play the Pirates on Friday gave the home team all it wanted. Palm Bay took advantage of turnovers and held on for the nondistrict win, pushing the team's winning streak to six games.
A mishandled snap before halftime also played a major role. Six seconds after Bulls defender Antwan Prince intercepted Steven Hughes inside the 10-yard line, Wiregrass Ranch quarterback James Tringali had to cover the ball about a foot inside the end zone for a safety with 33 seconds left in the second period.
After the free punt, Hughes found freshman Caleb Jackson for a 45-yard pass to set up a field goal by the Pirates (6-1) as the clock ran out. The series of plays turned a tie into a 12-7 halftime lead for the Pirates.
"We made some critical mistakes," Bulls coach Jeremy Shobe said after his team dropped to 4-2. "We should have taken a knee before halftime. They got five points off that fumble."
