The time to corral a 'reef donkey' is nearly over for recreational fishermen in the Gulf.
The NOAA Fisheries Service has announced that the recreational fishery for greater amberjack will close on October 24 after anglers reached the recreational quota of 1.368 million pounds that could be harvested in the Gulf of Mexico. The recreational harvest and possession of greater amberjack will be prohibited through the remainder of the current year.
Greater amberjacks earned the nickname 'reef donkey' because of their tenacity and stubbornness once they become hooked. They are the largest of the jack family, usually ranging between 20 and 40 pounds, but can weigh up to 150.
They can be found along rocky bottoms in 60-250 feet of water throughout the Gulf.
