Durant's Gottman honored after big victory against Sickles
Durant High football coach Mike Gottman has been selected as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Coach of the Week for Week 7 following the Cougars' 20-15 victory against Sickles on Friday.
Gottman will receive $1,000 for the Cougars' program for being selected, in addition to getting a personalized football from Bucs coach Raheem Morris and a tour of One Buc Place.
Gottman's Cougars improved to 6-1 after knocking off the Gryphons in a big non-district matchup at Sickles. Durant, which has won four in a row, has a bye this week before big district games against Plant City and Newsome in consecutive weeks.
SOFTBALL: Members of the 2009 Cambridge Christian varsity softball team were recently recognized as Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for having a grade-point average of 3.5 or better. The team's GPA of 3.71 ranked 16th in the nation among high schools that use a weighted system.
GOLF: Bishop McLaughlin finished second in the Class 1A-District 8 boys tournament with a team score of score of 362. The team will make its first appearance in the region tournament Monday. Hurricanes junior Kentaro Toyota was the individual district champion.
For the Bishop McLaughlin girls, Spencer Valdespino finished fourth overall in the district to individually qualify for the region tournament. She is the first girl to represent Bishop McLaughlin at a district tournament, and the first female golfer to qualify for the region tournament in school history.
