HUDSON - Last year, Dunedin's Justine Knox was accused of using her cell phone during her district match and was almost disqualified.
This year, she didn't have any teammates to text even if she wanted to, but just to be safe, she left her cell phone in her car.
It didn't matter because she fired a 4-under 66 to claim medalist honors at the Class 2A-District 12 girls golf tournament Monday at Meadow Oaks and advance to next Tuesday's regional play.
As expected, Mitchell ran away with the team title, scoring 297 to finish 33 strokes ahead of runner-up East Lake. Palm Harbor was third to complete the three teams advancing to regional action at Heritage Springs Country Club, which is Mitchell's home course.
"The girls played well," Mitchell coach Scott Schmitz said. "We had some girls that stepped up. Our 3-4-5s played really well."
Rebecca VanEtten led the Mustangs with a 69, including a 3-under 33 on the back nine. Older sister Megan VanEtten shot 72 and Emma Fivecoat and Victoria Kinney carded 78s. The Mustangs No. 5 player Kristen Pitts scored an 80, which was ninth-best in the tournament but didn't count toward Mitchell's team score.
Countryside's Erin Williamson (86) and Brittany Shouppe (87) were the other individuals advancing to regional.
