King's Gibson earns 2A-10 girls crown
ODESSA - King High senior Kelsey Gibson battled the flu, cold and wind, car problems and a sometimes errant driver to shoot a 75 and win the Class 2A-District 10 girls golf title Monday at Silver Dollar Golf Club.
The win allows her to advance to the Class 2A regionals next Monday at Heritage Harbor.
Sparked by a 45-foot birdie putt on No. 13, Gibson won individual honors by two shots over Plant's Laura Hendee. Plant's Kelsey Elsch finished third with an 83.
Plant, which also featured Laura Binkowski (89), Ashwni Bhide (103) and Kaitlin McPeak (108), easily outdistanced second-place Gaither.
The course conditions were rough and six-hour rounds were the norm. The wind was gusting from the opening tee shot.
"No one could be ready for that cold and wind," Gibson said. "It was all about staying in the moment and just thinking about every shot. I didn't get a chance to go to states last year. This is my last shot and I am not letting anything mess it up."
