TAMPA - Wardzinski, Opfer lead Durant to 2A-11 title
TAMPA - Durant's Erika Wardzinski had two birdies and shot a par 36 on the back nine at Heritage Isles en route to a district-leading 76, helping the Cougars win a second straight Class 2A-District 11 crown.
Windy conditions made for some erratic early conditions, but Wardzinski was able to find her stroke and go on to the day's low round. Teammate Madison Opfer finished second with a 79, as the two Cougars golfers were the only players to finish under 80.
"I figured I would be in the top five scores," Opfer said of her round. "I'm happy with the way it turned out, but I don't think today was one of my best days."
All of Durant's scoring players finished in the top 10 individually with Kerrie Reinhardt finishing fifth with an 85 and Olivia Higgins taking 10th with a 94.
"I always write down a number in the morning and today I wrote down 340," Durant coach Dick Sheffield said. "I don't ever tell the kids the number, but you want a target and today we came in where we needed."
The Cougars finished 35 strokes ahead of second-place Wharton, which was led by Brittany Bradshaw and Nina Hwang, who each shot 86. Riverview finished in third place with an 83 from Julia McQuilken.
