TAMPA - Jesuit coach George LaPenna said he was "pleasantly surprised" by his team's victory in Tuesday's Class 1A-District 14 golf tournament at Cheval.
"I seriously didn't expect to win, but these boys have been so persistent and so insistent on getting the most out of themselves that it is truly amazing," LaPenna said. "They are inspiring."
Using a true team contribution - with five golfers shooting between 79 and 86 - the Tigers finished with a 331 total, six ahead of second-place Berkeley Prep and 19 ahead of third-place Steinbrenner.
Berkeley featured the individual winner, Blake Morris, who finished with a 3-over-par 75, but the Bucs team had a falloff with its scores in the lower positions.
"It was a tough, windy day, but our guys hung in there and it paid off in the end," LaPenna said.
Jesuit's victory avenges two tough losses to Berkeley during the regular season.
