McConnell, Sharks win elusive crown
RIVERVIEW - Riverview senior Ian McConnell had a goal this season, and one rare to a game so singularly competitive as golf. That goal - a district title for the Sharks - is something that had eluded Riverview in the school's history.
Before Tuesday, that is.
McConnell shot a 1-over 71 to win his third consecutive district title and help Riverview get its elusive banner by winning the Class 2A-11 crown.
McConnell said the windy conditions at Summerfield were the most difficult he's played at the Sharks' home course.
McConnell and the Sharks' other four seniors combined for Riverview's first district title by scoring a combined 329. RJ Slater's 76 was the second-lowest round of the day, tying Durant's Ryan Hamm.
Travis Hopson and Conner Murphy finished out the scoring for the Sharks, each shooting 89. Tyler Young shot 92 to finish outside the scoring for the team, but he still finished 18th overall.
Also advancing to regionals were Wharton, in second place with 349 and led by Griffin Fuchs with an 84; and third-place Newsome with a 351 led by Brian Allen, who shot 80.
