TAMPA - Plant battled wind and high scores to win the Class 2A-District 10 boys golf championship Tuesday at Temple Terrace Golf Club.
Chamberlain's Gary Buffington fired a 75 to take medalist honors. He struggled on the back nine but made some key putts to take control.
"I knew I could make putts," he said. "I had the lead after the front and just tried not to mess it up. It was a decent round."
The Panthers will head to next Tuesday's regionals at Summerfield in Riverview. Zach Johnson posted a 78 to finish second and Charles Silverfield had a 79 to place fourth. Hank Bishop chipped in with an 82 as Plant finished nine shots ahead of Chamberlain.
Ben Lagos finished sixth for the Chiefs with an 81.
Gaither placed third behind Jimmy Stanger's 78. He was the only Gaither player in the top 10.
The high drama came on the three-for-two playoff after the tournament to decide the two players going to regionals. King's Hunter McPhillips and Alonso's Kody Tibbets edged Sickles' Danny Ervin in a two-hole playoff.
