TAMPA - By her own admission, Steinbrenner junior Alex Milan played a bipolar round in Tuesday's Class 1A-District 14 golf tournament at Cheval Golf and Country Club.
Meaning "up-and-down," as in six birdies, five bogeys and the rest pars, ending in a 1-over-par 73, good for a 14-shot individual victory over Tampa Prep's Kayla Poff, who shot 87.
"I was motivated by trying to help my team," Milan said. "I still felt pressure because I wanted to help our team finish as well as we could."
Despite Milan's efforts, Steinbrenner still fell 21 shots short to Academy of the Holy Names, which won with a 379 total, 13 shots ahead of second-place Berkeley Prep.
Milan, who plays Cheval as her home course, said part of the challenge derived from playing Tuesday's round from the red tees, positioned well ahead of the blue tees, which she normally plays.
"The yardages were a lot different and with the wind kicking up it made for some unfamiliar situations," Milan said.
