Tampa kicked off its Hispanic Heritage Season on Wednesday with a lively cultural event downtown at the Tampa Theatre.
Mayor Pam Iorio jump-started the 21st annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration with a proclamation, and flamenco dancers from the Patel Conservatory kept the party going with a colorful, Latin-flavored performance. Guests were also treated to a light lunch.
This year's guest speaker was Patsy Feliciano, interim director of diversity and equal opportunity at the University of South Florida.
The program was dedicated to the memories of Maria Esther Carrillo, founder of the nonprofit Taller Inter-Cultural Hispano Americano, and Dalia Lopez, mother of committee member Michelle Rivera.
Carrillo, a native of Colombia, was devoted to uniting and preserving Hispanic cultures in the Bay area. Lopez, a Tampa native, was a huge supporter of the Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Committee.
